Many of our friends have been frustrated by a desire to help Taylor when there isn't much anyone can do but a few doctors and a loving God.
The outpouring of support for Taylor has been overwhelming and heartwarming. From letters, cards, and gifts to gourmet food sufficient to both spoil and fatten us, people have been wonderful. You can't possibly know how much we appreciate it.
As it turns out though, you and many others CAN help. I don't know why it never dawned on us until the hospital raised the issue. We have had a visit from the blood donation center to give us some education about the blood transfusion situation for Taylor and about the intense need for blood and platelets.
Cancer patients use massive amounts of blood. Cancer centers have to be more selective about sources, and the blood has to be more heavily screened than at most hospitals since cancer patients frequently have impaired immune systems. They are constantly and dangerously short of blood, and platelets.
Taylor will get blood and platelets repeatedly during her chemo in the days leading up to surgery. She will also need very large supplies during her surgery. After surgery, she will again get tranfusions when she resumes chemo.
The NY Blood Center has asked that we at least try to replace what we use from their supplies at a minimum. They also asked us to encourage friends and relatives to help build the supply for Taylor, for emergencies and for other unfortunate victims of the disease. It only takes one visit to a pediatric cancer floor to feel the incredible motivation to help these kids fight the battle of their lives.
Taylor will get first shot at any blood or blood products donated. What you donate in Taylor's name will be held for her needs. Any overage will help other unfortunate victims. Sloan will track what is donated in Taylor's name and update us on the blood drive.
There are some things about donating for Columbia patients you should know:
All donoations are taken at the NY Blood Center locations all over the area but only at certain times in certain locations. The locations, times, and products collected are below. All types are needed and anyone can donate platelets.
Call the NY Blood Center at 800-439-6876 before you go and make sure that you are eligible.You will need the file number which is 32689, and the patient number which is 70542. You can give at the following locations:
- At Columbia on M/W/F starting at 4:00, Red Blood only-no platelets
- At Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, Thursday from 1:30 to 4:30. Red Blood only-no platelets
- In Elmsford at 525 Exec Blvd M-Thurs, Blood and platelets
- In Manhattan at 310 E. 66th St. Blood and platelets
